Jason Pogue, a LIFT Academy graduate, shares his remarkable journey to Republic Airways through the LIFT program, one of bold decisions, unwavering character and incredible accomplishments. His career change from a Professional Mental Health Counselor to Pilot was a return to a childhood passion that would ultimately propel him to greater heights. Jason has not only excelled in his flight training but has landed his new career at Republic Airways, where he continues to make an impact.
Though he didn’t initially pursue a career in aviation, Jason’s childhood was filled with moments that ignited his fascination with flight, recalling fond memories of family vacations. “The trips were great, but I was just as captivated by the act of traveling itself. I also remember playing Microsoft Flight Simulator with friends. We would pretend we were airline pilots for hours on end, just flying around.”
An Indianapolis native, LIFT was the perfect place for Jason’s pilot career to take off, offering both the convenience of local training and a clear path to Republic, the ultimate destination. It was exciting for Jason to get on track to Republic, with a career waiting for him and a base operation in Indianapolis. “I’d heard nothing but high praise for Republic from other pilots. When I visited LIFT for my interview, I arrived at an impressive facility—one that anyone would be proud to call home.”
Jason quickly found a second home at LIFT, not only growing as a pilot but as a leader. What began as his training turned into numerous leadership positions at LIFT upon graduation. After almost a year of instructing, he was promoted to Check Instructor, followed by Assistant Chief Flight Instructor. His journey continued as he entered a new role as Manager of Flight Standards. Among what he’s most proud of is volunteering with the Voluntary Safety Reporting Program (VSRP).
“My involvement with VSRP has led me to continue to invest and volunteer in similar safety programs at Republic, supporting our pilots and continuously ensuring we are running the safest operation out there.”
From day one, Jason appreciated how LIFT prepares pilots to enter the Republic flight deck. “While they always emphasized the flying skills, knowledge, and decision-making required to become a well-rounded pilot, LIFT seamlessly integrates Republic’s procedures and culture from the moment you step through the door. This made the transition to a Republic Embraer E170 much easier.”
Today, Jason has made the ultimate transition to Republic, flying out of Indianapolis, with a Captain upgrade on the near horizon. “It’s been great. As a career changer, I’ve had the opportunity to work several other more “normal” jobs, or 9-5s. I love the workflow where I just get to go fly an airplane, and when I’m done and the Captain sets the brake, I get to go home to my family, leaving work behind. The Embraer is an amazing plane to fly, and we have great crews making the workdays and overnights fun.”
True to his nature, Jason is most looking forward to becoming a Republic Captain for the opportunity to mentor its pilot group. “I love opportunities to lead, namely because you get to see and encourage your teammates to really come alive in their gifts and skills so that together you can deliver a great experience to customers and get everyone where they need to be safely, efficiently and reliably.”
If you’re interested in becoming a pilot, we recommend following Jason’s advice:
“Take a discovery flight and see if you enjoy flying. Read through the FAA’s free textbook: The Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK). Reading through this will give you an idea of the knowledge, concepts, skills and study habits required to become a pilot. If you can’t stop smiling after your discovery flight, and reading the PHAK doesn’t deter your smile, you’ve probably found your new career!”
