The LIFT Lab: It’s a Virtual Hit

What’s cooler than a standard virtual reality flight simulator? A virtual reality flight simulator on wheels, of course! The LIFT Lab is our mobile VR flight simulator that first debuted in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for the 2018 EAA AirVenture airshow. Attendees were treated to the experience of what it feels like to fly an airplane, all from the comfort of our customized van.

The LIFT Lab features four stations where users put on virtual reality glasses to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Our state-of-the-art flight simulators allow the “pilot” to go far behind what aviation video games have to offer—after removing the glasses, we constantly hear comments like “Wow, I really thought I was flying! It feels weird to take off the glasses and not find myself in the cockpit.”

Other than just being a ton of fun, the virtual reality flight simulator allows people who wonder if they might be interested in becoming a pilot to have a much better idea if this is something they would want to do as a job. It’s the next best thing to, well, the real thing. And, as a LIFT instructor said, “If you take to the air in a small plane and can’t get the smile off your face, then this job is for you.” We’re seeing an awful lot of smiles.

The LIFT Lab is yet another way we are opening doors for more and more people to pursue a career as a pilot. Because it’s mobile, we’re able to take the thrill of “flying” a plane to airshows and recruiting events at colleges and high schools around the country. The LIFT Lab is a great tool for teachers and guidance counselors who are looking for an additional way to interest their students in STEM-related curriculum, activities and career opportunities.
