Fly By Summer Camp Recap

Here at LIFT we believe there is a place for everyone in aviation and that it is never too early to learn about the different opportunities in the industry. This past month we hosted our first in-person summer camp, Fly By, as an opportunity to educate campers on all things aviation.  We welcomed over 30 campers to our hangar for a full day of hands-on fun. Even the parents gave the camp a 5-star rating:

“My son attended camp and LOVED it! He is already talking about next year and any other events you have. He will be a freshman in high school and is talking about going into Aerospace Engineering. This was right up his alley. Thank you for providing such an awesome day for him!” – Parent of a Fly By camper.

Campers explored several areas of aviation and participated in the following interactive activities:

  • LIFT Lab – Who doesn’t love virtual reality? Campers took flight in our LIFT Lab and flew the DA-40 NG in Lake Tahoe. They were coached through the controls as they did an introductory flight.
  • Maintenance – Campers listened to Joey, LIFT Manager of AMT Development, discuss all parts of the aircraft and explain what each does. They labeled all the parts discussed and really tested their knowledge on our DA-40 NG aircraft.
  • Weather–Weather and aviation go hand in hand. Campers learned about different types of clouds as well as wind and how they both impact flight.
  • Four Forces of Flight- Campers did hands-on activities to help understand aerodynamics and how the four forces act on an aircraft.
  • Simulator Session – Each camper got a chance to fly in our sims, having the opportunity to select which airports they took off from and landed at!
  • Paper Airplane Contest – We know everyone likes making paper airplanes, so why not have more fun with it? Campers made their very own paper airplanes, decorated them and participated in several rounds of a contest for prizes. There were lots of winners!
  • Republic Airways Pilot Panel – A Republic Airways First Officer and Captain joined us to share their airline stories. Campers got to ask the pilots questions about their career and get insight on what it takes to start their flying career!
