Choosing where to start your flight training is a big decision. Every LIFT Academy location provides its students with the same innovative, cutting-edge flight school program and defined pathway to a career as a commercial pilot at Republic Airways, but at the same time, each campus has its own unique charm and culture. We sat down to speak with Michael Johnson, Student Advisor at our Galveston campus, for his insights on what student life is like in Texas.
With its bright blue skies, picturesque palm trees and beautiful beaches, it’s easy to see why Galveston Island is a popular destination for students and tourists alike. “When students come back from their first flight, they just have this look on their face,” said Michael. “You can tell that it makes learning fun.”
The views aren’t the only thing students love about our Galveston flight school, however. Galveston is in Class D (or Class Delta) airspace, meaning there’s much less air traffic here than there is in metropolitan areas. Flight training is not easy at any stage, but this allows our students to build their confidence before advancing to higher-traffic airspaces.
“Our students have the opportunity to get some lessons under their belt before moving on to busier airspaces,” Michael explained.
Our flight training program is designed to help you achieve your dreams of becoming an aviator. The instructors and advisors here in Galveston will do everything they can to help you make that goal a reality, but they aren’t the only ones.
“The culture here is all about teamwork,” Michael explained. “The students here try their best to pull up the next person. It’s just normal here.”
At LIFT, you’ll be spending a lot of time in the flight simulator, and while you may be the one operating the sim, you’re never truly flying solo. It’s common practice for students here to flock around the sims, taking notes and giving advice as needed. Some students enjoy this so much that they become Certificated Flight Instructors, meaning they get paid to instruct other students while still earning flight time and building their own skills.
They say that life is all about balance, and the same is true for flight training. There will be many late nights and early mornings spent studying or honing your skills, and while that kind of drive is crucial to your success, so is taking the time to unwind. Galveston Island is the perfect place to do just that.
At our Galveston flight school, you’re never far from the fun. Whether you’re into biking, kayaking, frisbee golf, surfing, fishing or just enjoying some good seafood, there’s no shortage of ways to spend your free time. That way, when you’re back on campus, you’re ready to hit the ground running.
